What does this grant program support?

The following list does not include all possible opportunities eligible for support, but it does illustrate a general range of activities for which high school students can receive assistance through the Arts Council for Wyoming County’s Balus Foundation Grants for Young Artists program:

Attending a workshop, seminar and/or master class. This may include viewing a professional performance or exhibit;

Preparation with a private teacher for a special recital, exhibit or competition;

Funds toward a college course that focuses on an artistic area;

Assistance for travel connected to a unique opportunity.

These grants do not support:

Purchase of art materials, supplies and /or musical scores (except materials required for an approved workshop, exhibit, performance or class opportunity).

Purchase of durable goods such as musical instruments, equipment, software, etc.

Tickets for a professional performance or exhibit only.

General college tuition.

Expenses related to marketing or promotion of artist/artwork.

More than one individual student per grant.

Who can apply?

To apply you must be:

An individual high school freshman, sophomore, junior or senior (or home-schooled equivalent) in the academic year in which the opportunity takes place, and a resident of Wyoming County.

What is the selection process?

Evaluation and selection of the grant recipients will be made by a panel of artists and instructors. Individual applicants may receive no more than one grant per year through this program.

What are the criteria used?

Grants will be awarded based on the following criteria:

Artistic quality of the opportunity;

Student’s related experience or preparation in the discipline and;

Student’s demonstrated ability to successfully participate in opportunity.

Each applicant is required to write a brief, focused proposal (application narrative). Make sure every word in the narrative supports the funding request.

How do I apply?

Applicants must complete parts 1 through 4 of 2-page application, and mail or deliver it, along with all supporting materials (below), to the Arts Council for Wyoming County by deadline (May 1st, 2008). Please type or print neatly.

The following supporting materials are required for evaluating your opportunity:

1) Letter of recommendation, including brief, general critique of your work from teacher, instructor, or professional artist familiar with your work. If proposal is for private instruction, this letter must be from the instructor with whom you propose to work, and confirm the instructor’s willingness to work with the student;

2) As applicable: Provide materials pertaining to specific opportunity, such as copies of brochures, course description or syllabus, resume of prospective instructor, etc.)

How much money is awarded?
 

Applicants may apply for amounts between $50 and $500.

Grant recipients may receive all or part of the amount requested. The panel may choose to not fund any request based on criteria. Decisions of the panel are final.

When will I be notified?

Applicants will be notified within six weeks, following the application deadline. 

If I’m approved for the grant, what must I do?

You must do the following:

Submit proof to the ACWC that you have been accepted into the opportunity for which you have requested funds, before you may receive your grant;

Sign, and have your parent(s)/legal guardian sign the acceptance letter, and return the acceptance letter by the acceptance date.

Send a photo of yourself to the Arts Council for Wyoming County (ACWC) for publicity purposes, with a signed letter of permission from yourself and your parent(s)/legal guardian for the ACWC to use the photograph for publicity purposes;

Submit a brief final report, at the end of the opportunity for which you’ve received the grant, along with receipts or a record of expenses, to the ACWC. Any unused portion of the grant must be returned to the ACWC for future disbursement.
