THE "FLOATING COWS" OF THE LETCHWORTH ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW & SALE ™

The Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show & Sale's new "floating cows" logo has generated a lot of buzz here in Western New York, and the show's producer, the Arts Council for Wyoming County, is pleased to announce that t-shirts, tote bags, and signed, limited edition hand-pulled prints including the artwork are available. Those interested can find out more by contacting the ACWC at 585-237-3517, visiting the website at www.artswyco.org, or visiting the organization's booth (I-9) at the Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show, Highbanks Recreation Area, Letchworth State Park, Oct. 6-8, 10-5 daily.

The artwork, which includes an image of a cow tied to a air balloon floating over the Letchworth State Park gorge and railroad trestle bridge, was created by Jonathan Daly. Daly was raised in Wyoming County, NY in a family of artists. His parents are East Arcade residents Christine and Thomas Aquinas Daly, and his twin brother, Sean, a professional artist and graphic designer (www.seandalydesign.com), was his constant companion and artistic competition throughout his childhood. Since graduating as a student of Pioneer High School in 2000, Jon has studied seriously as a painter, receiving his fine arts degree from Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts in 2004, and currently is working toward an MFA from Boston University, where he studies intensely under artist John Walker and serves as a teaching assistant.

In his studio in Boston, Jonathan paints daily. Painting is not the only medium he resorts to regularly, however. In 2005, after graduating from Syracuse University, Jon and a college friend, Ben Whitla, moved to Portland OR and started Entire Catalogue, a cutting-edge graphic design business. From concert posters, to web sites, to t-shirts, to compact disc covers and more, Entire Catalogue has designed for clients in Boston, New York City, Syracuse, and elsewhere. Always with humor and often a hint of nostalgia, the floating cow logo exhibits the character of the work Entire Catalogue clients look for.  Visit www.entirecatalogue.com to learn more about this visit, and go to www.jonathandaly.com to learn more about Jonathan Daly's fine art.

This Columbus Day Weekend, be sure to visit ACWC's booth at its Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show to see these products and learn about the Arts Council for Wyoming County. Admission and parking for the craft show are free with entrance to the park.

HISTORY

As many know, the Letchworth Arts and Craft Show's humble beginnings included a smattering of paintings on a few fence-posts in Letchworth State Park. The birth of the Arts Council for Wyoming County 31 years ago provided the opportunity to have it continue, and grow. "Our first effort was put on at the meadow just below Glen Iris [Inn]," relates Gilly Burlingham, local activist and arts patron, who joined the Arts Council's first Executive Director, Judy Tyler, in making the show an annual event. "We had about 38 exhibitors and it was called the 'Arts Council for Wyoming County Letchworth State Park Maple-Leaf-Viewing-Time Amateur/Professional Arts & Crafts Show & Sale'." Over the years, the show moved from the Glen Iris lawn, to the Lower Falls area, to the Trailside Lodge. Increasing crowds and traffic led to its current location, at the Highbanks Recreation Area near the Mt. Morris entrance to the park.

Welcome to the 32nd Annual Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show & Sale
October 6, 7 & 8, 2007
2007 Theme:
  Everything Old is New Again

I’m happy to introduce myself. My name is Patricia Hughes, and I serve as Executive Director of the Arts Council for Wyoming County, which originated and has produced the Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show & Sale for 32 years! The show attracts tens of thousands of people from all over the Western New York area as well as Ontario, Canada. Our small staff and a host of volunteers keep things running smoothly from year to year, and it’s always a wonderful experience.

This year’s theme is “Everything Old is New Again.” Perhaps you enjoy nostalgia, historical reproduction, or traditional crafts. Or- maybe you make traditional crafts with a “twist”, adapted with your own unique vision. Perhaps you enjoy creating altered art or books, or including found objects in your work. Or maybe your style is “retro”. Once again this year, exhibitors will be able to enter work to be judged for prizes in each category, including our special “themed” category. If you are juried into LACS, you’ll be asked to let this “Old is New” theme inspire you, and enter the results into our judging. A cash award of $100 goes to each category winner, and $100 extra goes to the one who comes out on top as the “Best of Show” winner. The theme doesn’t influence our jury, however - so don’t worry about including themed items with your jury images in your application.

If you are new to LACS, we’re excited to meet you! Please read this application thoroughly, so you will understand what we’re about. If you are a returning vendor, remember that we began our three-year jury cycle in 2006, so everyone’s work will go before the jury again this year (after three consecutive years of initial acceptance, vendors have three years jury-free - a policy that went into effect in 2006). We’re happy to announce we will be accepting digital images on CD for the first time this year. Please read the specs inside...

One final note: ACWC makes every effort to ensure vendors exhibiting in the LAC Show are of the highest quality. Since exhibitors are accepted based on photographic images, but we have found that often those images do not represent what is sold in booths, we are now asking for artists or crafters to include photographs of themselves at work in their studios with their applications. In this way we hope to eliminate vendors who “buy and sell” mass produced items, rather than make them themselves. We thank you, in advance, for your cooperation with this.

Please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions about our show. We are very proud to present it for its 32nd year, and we hope we’ll see you there!

Cheers,

Patricia A. Hughes LAC Show Director
