Arts Council to Host Artists in the Schools Grant Application Workshop

Perry, NY – The Arts Council for Wyoming County announces it will host an Artists in the Schools Grant Application Workshop with Genesee Valley Council on the Arts Program Coordinator, Jean Hennessey, Thursday, May 11, 5pm, at its location at 31 South Main Street, Perry. 

Funds of up to $1500 are available through the program for projects that benefit students by partnering artists with teachers. The grant application deadline is June 28.

Artists, teachers and community members interested in the program are welcome to attend.  Ms. Hennessey will guide participants in the grant writing process and explain the programs guidelines.

The Artists in the Schools program, a re-grant program made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts Arts In Education-Local Capacity Building program, is available to public and private schools that have not-for-profit status in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties and Wayland-Cohocton Central School. It funds artists to work with teachers integrating the arts into the core curriculum. Past projects have explored the Erie Canal through regional music, Greek mythology and theatre through drama, anatomy through drawing and painting, creative writing through storytelling, African culture through African drumming, and more.

Successful applicants can receive up to $1,500 toward the cost of the residency. Applications for the next round must be postmarked by June 28 Applicants must consult with the GVCA program coordinator, Jean Hennessey, (585-243-6785) before applying.

 

ACWC's Portfolio Assistance Program

High school art majors: 

NEED HELP WITH YOUR COLLEGE PORTFOLIO?

Are you applying to a college art or design program that requires a portfolio review as part of the admission process?

Did you know that most Visual Arts programs are willing to review your work in slide format if you submit it through the mail?

We can help! For the last three years the Arts Council for Wyoming County has offered a program to assist high school art majors preparing their portfolios for college. Call or email for an appointment. It's free, it's easy and it will only take a half hour of your time.

o Select 15 -20 pieces of your best work for us to photograph.

o We will take professional quality slides for you to submit to the colleges of your choice.

oServices, film, development and slide presentation sleeves are available to Wyoming County students FREE of charge.

Arts Council Announces 5th Annual On-line Student Poetry Contest

Wyoming County High School students in grades 9-12 are invited to submit up to three poems to the Arts Council's for Wyoming County’s Annual Online Student Poetry Contest.  Participating students must be currently enrolled in a high school in Wyoming County, home-schooled residents of Wyoming County, or residents of Wyoming County who are schooled outside of the county.

Abby Sparling Memorial Awards The following awards will be presented in honor and in memory of Abby Sparling, “The Faerie Lady”, who was a cherished member of the Wyoming County arts community who passed away in 2003.  Through these awards, the Arts Council hopes to recognize the spirit of creativity, which Abby inspired in those whose lives she touched, and which will ever continue through the inspired efforts of our county’s young people. 

A First Place award will include $50 cash and a $50 savings bond from the Bank of Castile; Second Place, $25 cash and a $50 savings bond from M&T bank; Third Place, $25 cash.  All entrants will receive recognition, as the poetry submitted will be displayed on ACWC's website for the public to read. Last year’s entries are still posted, and will continue to be posted through March, 2006.

Poems for the contest must be original work of the student, and must be submitted by email to the Arts Council for Wyoming County by April 30, 2006.  The poems will be judged by experienced writers and educators.  List of criteria for students and judges is available on the Arts Council’s website (follow Poetry Contest link).

Winners will be announced in May.

EMAILED submissions are preferred, and ALL submissions must be made solely by the student entering the contest (not by teachers or parents, please!).  Email to: poetrycontest@artswyco.org.   Include name, grade, and school with each submission.  Limit: Three entries per student.  Entries may be mailed Attention: Poetry Contest to ACWC, P.O.
